Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I would like to recognize Tanger Outlets as a major contributor to the cause. They found a way to make people want to donate. You "donate" one dollar to breast cancer research and receive a coupons for 25% one regular price good in most stores in their outlet centers. People are much more likely to give if they get something in return. This is an unfortunate truth about human nature.

There are many companies out there that have created some "Pink" products that give a portion of proceeds to breast cancer research. Swarovski Crystal has a "Hope for Pink" collection. Kenneth Cole and others also have products that generate donations for research and awareness as well.

Shop wisely this October and you could help a worthy cause.

Ronald McDonald House Charities

One of the main purposes of the Ronald McDonald House Charities is to provide housing for families so they can stay near major hospitals that provide long-term care to the patient. This allows the family to stay together, instead of one parent having to stay behind and watch children, for example. As any doctor will tell you, attitude can have a direct effect on treatment and recovery. There is nothing better for a positive attitude then having your family nearby.

Ronald McDonald Houses do collect a $5 to $25 per day fee, depending on the area. However, it is policy that no family ever be turned away if they cannot pay.

Ronald McDonald Charities also extend far beyond providing housing near hospitals. See what all they accomplish at rmhc.org

McDonald's, of course, is the corporate sponsor of Ronald McDonald Houses, giving untold amounts of money. They also collect money from customers, mostly the loose change you complain about having to carry in your pocket or purse. The next time you choose to keep your change from McDonald's rather than drop it in the charity collector, visit the website and read one of the featured stories. Then think about how good you will feel knowing you helped support such a worthy cause.

You don't have to be rich to help save lives, your spare change will help. Give what you can, you never know when you may be the one in need.

St. Jude and Corporate Partners

Located in Memphis, TN, St. Jude was founded by Danny Thomas more than fifty years ago. They specialize in pediatric cancer treatment and research. No child is ever denied treatment at St. Jude because of a family's inability to pay. They operate as a 501c3 not for profit, supported primarily by ALSAC, its fundraising operation.

St. Jude is unique in that it houses research and patient care in the same facility. It also freely shares its discoveries with the scientific communities around the world. St. Jude is a wonderful and worthy organization.

You can make donations by going to stjude.org and clicking "donate now" or by making a purchase in the gift shop page. However, you can also help by patronizing their corporate partners who donate generously to St. Jude. These companies support this wonderful organization with money and awareness.

Target, Chili's, Kay Jewelers, Williams-Sonoma, New York & Company, CVS, KMart, Dicks Sporting Goods, AutoZone, AOL, Radio Shack, Gymboree, Ann Taylor, Dollar General, HSN, Brooks Brothers, The Melting Pot, Jewelers For Children.
